Hydration and Electrolytes
Sometimes when people begin their Ketogenic or LCHF journey, they will experience some unpleasant effects. As your body transitions from a sugar-burning metabolism to a fat-burning one, you may have some symptoms pop up.
You could feel tired, headache-y, dehydrated or flu-ish. Much of this has to do with detoxing from sugar (which the body and brain become very addicted to) and early ketosis. When fat is burned and broken down and in the absence of an excess of dietary glucose, those broken down fat cells will break into very small parts called ketones which the body can use for energy.
Because of this you will definitely want to be well hydrated and even add some extra electrolytes to alieve many of the effects. Simply by adding a teaspoon of true or Himalayan salt to your water a couple of times a day, this will help to reduce symptoms as your body flushes toxins and ketones out of your system. You may want to make sure you are getting adequate B and C vitamins too because they are water soluble, and easily flushed through our body’s elimination system.
In case you didn’t know, the recommended minimum water requirement is one-half of your body weight in ounces per day. You’ll have to also drink more than that if you drink coffee or other caffeinated products, you exercise or if you are in a place that is really hot.
