I never wanted a tattoo until I started Crossfit…what should I do?
By Annie Berryhill
Ok, I admit, before I started Crossfit 3 years ago, I never thought about getting a tattoo. There was no particular reason why I never got one, really, just that I never had seen or thought of anything appealing or meaningful enough to put on my body forever. But now that I am around it all the time, it just seems cool and normal. I am more the exception than the rule when it comes to being tattooed.
But over the last 3 years, I have seen some really amazing people with some stunning tattoos and it has started to really get me thinking about getting one. But the truth is, I know once I get it, there is really no going back, kinda like how marriage is supposed to be! So I really need to choose wisely, right?
It's a big deal! Our oldest son, the Marine has MANY tattoos. For the most part while very nicely done, what the designs he chose just baffle me. He is going to be stuck with that 1/2 sleeve until they put him in the ground and it seems funny to me to imagine an old dude with wrinkly skin all covered with blobs of outlined images all over his body. But whatever..his money, his body, not mine!
But, I am on the "D side of OLD right now. I mean, isn't 45 a little too late to consider getting a tattoo? I am pretty fit, my skin is still cooperating but I have way less time to be in that condition then the 20-somethings I regularly workout with.
I wonder, will people think different of me? Will they even give it a 2nd thought about my tattoo? I don't really care, it's just a thought. I am pretty sure that in Crossfit, it would be just another gal with broad shoulders and ink on her body. But what about in the rest of the "real" world? You know, the world where short shorts and sports-bra-only wearing girls are thought of as being a little sleazy?
If I do get one, it will be a meaningful one. It will include something about my 3 loves, Damon and our boys Josh and Jake. But for the life of me, I cannot tie it all together in a design. But dangit, I really want it.
Have you ever been on the fence about some permanent choice you need to make? Fortunately, most things we choose are not dire or irreversible. Things like changing your food, or starting a new workout program are present only as long as we choose for them to be present. But, the changes that happen as a result of those day to day choices ultimately have more powerfully good lasting effects than a permanent thing like a tattoo. Isn't that weird?
Here's your chance to chime in on the tattoo thing.
- Do you have one?
- Do you regret it?
- Do you wish you did?
- What stops you from doing it?
- What about me, do you think I should do it?
It would be great to get a big discussion going through the comment box…I am curious about what you have to say!
Of course when you are ready to "try out" some powerful actions that just might change your life like clean eating and Crossfit, you know I am here to help!
